COURT ST. ATHENS
The Athens City Sidewalk Renovation Phases 1 through 4 involved the replacement of existing sidewalks, incorporating a new 4’-0” square control joint pattern with 2’-0” sections at meter locations, designed to be easily maintained or replaced in modular sections for future sidewalk improvements. The project included placing new street lights, landscaping, parking meters and trash receptacles. Street lights were designed for hanging holiday banners and lights. Street corners and building entrances, where possible, were designed to meet ADA requirements. Involving multiple interested entities including the City of Athens, the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and Ohio University, PNA stressed coordination during the project. Since the main uptown arterial for cars and pedestrians has long defined Court Street’s existence, many business owners and citizens were concerned about durations of the disturbance to normal operations. Therefore PNA sequenced the project so construction would minimally interrupt pedestrian and vehicle access. In addition, both lanes of Court Street remained open throughout the construction period.
