RAIN FRESH HARVEST
A passive solar greenhouse provides the apparatus for year-round production of vegetables, herbs, fruits and aquaculture fish. Key components include: • South-facing exposure positioned to collect solar incidence for sufficient light to grow crops in limited sun during Ohio's winters. • Energy-efficient, twin-wall clear polycarbonate glazing material capable of withstanding strong storms. • Winter thermal insulation with an automated retractable curtain system, utilizing a double curtain approach with a combination of upper level insulated fabric and a lower level row covering material. The curtain system also provides shade in the summer. • Radiant floor heating to utilize solar thermal collectors, with a backup propane high efficiency on-demand water heater. • Thermal mass held in rainwater collection storage tanks, aquaculture tanks and thickened concrete slab flooring. • Passive solar cooling using thermal activated in-wall and cupola venting system. • Integrated production system for incorporation of animal by-products such as eggs, and fish. • Mechanical service areas for food processing, biofiltration and recycling of collected rainwater, air exchange filtration between animal and plant sections, pumps, irrigation piping, fans for ventilation, renewable energy conversion system. • Designed for off-the-grid food production, the electrical power is supplied by a combination of 2.1 kW solar photovoltaic panels and a 1 kW wind turbine on an 80-foot tower, with an inverter system and batteries for energy storage.
